Doctor Who Stuff

I'm sure it's all the fault of that episode 'Blink'.

If you remember, one of the characters said that he had 'The Angels have the Phone Box' on a t-shirt. Well, sure enough, 24 hours later lots of designs were hitting the internet. Here are just some from Cafepress.

Then at the end of last season, there were the Master themed shirts;

And then with the library two-parter, came this little gem;

I'm sorry I can't link to the images, but there is some great stuff there if you take the time to search. You just have to try different keywords as 'Doctor Who' doesn't work. Try 'Who Doctor' in stead.

Primeval - Episode 4 (ITV1)

Oooh! Well, things are really getting interesting.

Cutter has now seen the strange guy, and Abby really doesn't like the girl.

Poor Rex! Good to see he was alright after his sojourn in the fridge.

Some other thoughts and questions;
  • What did the future walruses want with Abby?
  • Just how many bullets does a magazine of an automatic rifle hold, because that one that Stephen took was spraying a lot.
  • Please don't tell me you can get a gun that wet and it will still work!
  • Actually, how did Stephen swim through a tunnel that was supposed to be a tight fit for the remote control submarine?
  • The typical 'I love you' moment. Why can these people not say it at a better time? (Marcus Cole fan-girl here)
  • Cutter getting hold of Connor's hand would not have helped Abby, as she was just about to slip out of the grip anyway.
  • So Helen is with the bad guys. What does she want, and is this the same Helen as in the first season? It should be as the change to reality happened before she disappeared at the end of last season.
  • If it is the same Helen, then how come she is up to speed with this reality so quickly?
  • I'm glad we had a scene with Jenny sans make-up and hairstyle. She actually looked like Claudia, which she doesn't usually.

Blood Red Snow White by Marcus Sedgwick - A Review

I bought a proof copy of this book off Ebay some time ago as I am a great fan of Arthur Ransome and I was looking forward to the tale. This is what I thought.

----------------------------

Blood Red Snow White is the story of Arthur Ransome’s time in Russia and his love affair with Evgenia. It is a story we all know, if not in great detail, and with some literary embellishments would make a ripping boy’s own story.

Unfortunately, this book is not that.

It is split into three sections, each written in a different style, and focusing on a different aspect of the story. The first tells the history of the Russian revolution, and is written in the style of Old Peter’s Russian Tales. I found this section to be redundant as very little of the history of that time is needed to set the scene of Arthur’s story. The pages of metaphor with a bear raging towards the city and the narrative of Rasputin and the Romanovs have no direct impact on what comes later in the book, and would have been better to be compressed to a single page.

The middle has Arthur, on the night of an important meeting looking back at the moments leading up to it. It is here that we learn of Arthur’s meeting with Evgenia, his troubled relationship with Ivy, and his struggles travelling to and from Russia. The flashbacks are interspersed with Arthur’s thoughts and actions, all written in the present tense, which I found distracting from the main story.

The third part is the first person narrative of Arthur and tells of his time with Evgenia in Latvia, and then when she returns to Russia, how he follows to rescue her. Here we have the famous crossing of no mans land and the chess match with a White Army officer. This is the best part of the book, but even here seems to lack something. There is none of the vivid description of the countryside that you would expect from Arthur. The narrative is just a little pedestrian.

The book is quite readable, and gives us quite a detailed view of a troubled time in Russian history. What it is not is a children’s adventure book. Quite apart from the many different styles and at least one flashback that I didn’t realise was one until later, there are uses of language that is very adult. I will not be buying this for my school library.

This is a great missed opportunity. With a slightly simpler plot and more descriptive action written in the third person, we could have had a very good ‘based on true events’ adventure.

Primeval - Worms in the Mist (ITV1)

EEK!

That just goes to show it's what you can't see that scares you most. Nice idea using the fog, it meant they didn't have to use as much CGI.

Some other notes:
  • Rex is still there. Good to see he didn't get erased from existence.
  • Claudia has been turned into a stupid woman! Perhaps she should have got eaten!
  • Connor should know that you NEVER say things like "We're going to be alright now" (made me jump though)
  • NEVER ignore a fire alarm! Some people are so stupid.
  • Who is that mysterious guy that Connor saw? On going plotline me-thinks.
  • Connor is still geeky. How much though remains to be seen.
  • Helen's got a haircut, where I don't know. How does she survive, and how come she finds anomolies that always bring her back to our time?

All in all a very good episode, which kept me on tenderhooks.

Strange Dreams

Well, all dreams are strange, but this one I just had last night.

JMS (of Babylon 5) was staying with me and my family; don't ask me why. He was in the process of writing something, but I don't know what. He made friends with my two cats (strange because we only have one at the moment).

At one point he was sharing a meal with my family. Someone mentioned that I was being quiet, and I said something like, "I can't talk about story ideas or speculate, so there's no reason to talk." I do remember mentioning that Mum got worried about Zack at one point, and that my friend who was there never got past the beginning of season four.

Then JMS and I went shopping. In one shop, a whole crowd of reporters and photographers turned up. They started taking pictures of a group of sci-fi fans who were there in Star Trek uniform. I said something like, "Typical, just because it's Sci-fi they go for Star Trek. Hey, if you want, I've got two Ranger uniforms at home!" The photographers ignored me and kept taking pictures of JMS and the fans.

So there, strange dream that probably doesn't mean anything.

On a related note, JMS has the next of his script books coming out on 23rd January. If you haven't heard about these yet, then take a look at his Cafepress store.
